My Weight-loss Journey so far
My Weight Loss Journey
Good Morning Ladies and Gents!!!
It has been quite a while since I posted, and I apologize for that. Not a lot has been going on with my journey except me losing weight and trying to exercise. So, I thought today I would talk a little bit about where I started and where I am now. Also, before I get this blog started, I need to hear from you, what things do you want me to write about? What do you want to know?
When I started this journey, I was struggling with weight and feeling tired all the time and just overall really sad and unmotivated. I was 325lbs and really was at my wit's end, not knowing what to do because I was not losing the weight I wanted to lose. Then one day my mom came across a Facebook post from an old co-worker, her daughter had gotten pregnant with having PCOS. So, my mom told me to reach out to her friend, and her friend had given me her daughter’s name. So, July 16th, 2016 this is the message I left her on Facebook:
My name is Alexandra Dickerson my mom and your mom worked together at USC. First of all, congrats on becoming a mom. My mom came across your story on your mom's page, it is very inspiring and close to my heart. I also have PCOS with the same symptoms that you have and have been trying to conceive for quite some time now. Your mom also said I should get in touch with you. Your story shows me that there is still hope and that someday I will be able to have children. What herbs are you taking and what are you going to keep the symptoms at bay. The hardest part for me right now is the weight loss.
She responded back a few weeks later and told me exactly what she does, this is what she said:
So, one of the things I've learned about PCOS is that it is an inflammatory disorder. One of the biggest ways to help fight against PCOS is to diminish your inflammation. To do this, I started the Paleo diet. I took my time to Soli weed out inflammatory foods. For the first month I removed gluten products, then I then the second month removed dairy, then I removed soy. I also greatly diminished my intake of any sort of grains. It's also good to know that soy products can affect estrogen levels. Often time with PCOS estrogen is dominant, soy products increase estrogen levels, so this is bad. Next, I went to a naturopathic medical doctor and she put me on several different herbs. My doctor tailor-made an herbal regimen to meet my hormonal needs. If you're willing, I would highly suggest going to a naturopathic doctor. I hope this helps!
So, after seeing her response and then going and doing some research of my own, I decided to give it a try. August 2016, I went totally gluten-free. It only took a few weeks for me to start feeling better and to start losing the weight. It was a big adjustment for me and my family. I now had to start reading every single label when I went shopping for groceries, and going out to eat was a challenge I had to be that person, that had to ask if they had a gluten-free menu. But I will say it didn’t take long for my body to adjust to no gluten and there are a lot of really tasty gluten-free foods out there. By the end of the month, I was feeling more energized and had even lost 10lbs. I was then motivated to lose more weight. September, I continued being gluten-free and, I went Dairy Free and it was a lot easier than I thought seeing as I was a chocoholic, I'm really enjoying the Paleo recipes I've been using. This month(October) is Soy Free and this one is harder I never realized how many different foods had soy in them. Most surprising was Tuna. But I’m doing good and feeling good. So far on my journey, I've lost a total of 21 lbs. This update was from December of 2016, I have officially gone Gluten, dairy, and soy free. I've lost 30lbs and am officially under 300lbs ๐ also this month I got my period naturally after about 4 years of not having one or inducing one with Progesterone. A Year later and I’m still going strong and losing the weight. I have officially lost over 50lbs and went from 325lbs, and currently, as of November 11, 2017, I’m 272lbs. This year after a lot of research I decided to go Pescatarian, which is basically Vegetarian but I still eat fish and eggs. It has been the biggest change but the best change. I’ve also stopped drinking soda, and I’m slowly starting to cut out all sugars and eventually carbs.
For Exercise, I did Cardio Drumming for a bit at a place near where I live, I would go Monday, and Saturday and they had another exercise class I would go to on Wednesday. It got to be kind of expensive so I decided that I would do the Cardio Drumming at home. I also walk whenever possible and I have a variety of workout DVDs and games. I try to workout at least 3 times a week, but honestly, I have not been as motivated to work out and I need to get that motivation back.
Well, I think that is all for now, what else would you like to know? Should I do a What I eat in a day video? I know there is a lot of information and lot to read, but if you want to know more I’m all ways willing to talk about it if there is something specific you want me to write about leave it in the comments below! Also be on the lookout for my 30 facts about me video coming soon!
